ITHACA
The island of Ithaca a small Greek
island in the Ionian Sea, belonging to the Ionian Islands and is
located northeast of the island of Kefalonia has an area of 96 km ²
and had 3,084 inhabitants in 2001. Administratively, it is a separate
municipality of Kefalonia and Ithaka.
The capital, Vathy, has one of the
largest natural harbors that serve as refuge for ships in the world.
There
are doubts about the island now called Ithaca is the legendary home
of Odysseus (Ulysses)
, the
protagonist of Homer's Odyssey. The author describes 26 specific
locations in Ithaca and none of them seem to correspond to modern
Ithaca. There are several theories to explain why this is so, none of
which is conclusive. On the other hand, some scholars believe may be
relevant to where inhabited the same Homer.
The
Odyssey
is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer.It
is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other work traditionally
ascribed to Homer. It was probably composed near the end of the 8th
century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek-speaking coastal region of
what is now Turkey.
The poem mainly centers on the Greek hero Odysseus (or
Ulysses, as he was known in Roman myths) and his long journey home
following the fall of Troy. In his absence, it is assumed he has
died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group
of unruly suitors, the Mnesteres, competing for Penelope's hand in
marriage.

Kavafy
biography
Cavafy was born in Alexandria, Egypt, where his father
was a wealthy merchant. After his death in 1870 the family had to
move to Liverpool. Constantino returned to Alexandria in 1882.
With the start of the riots in 1885 the
family had to move again, this time to Istanbul. When Cavafy returned
to Alexandria would to stay the rest of his life. At first he worked
as a journalist, then in the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works for
thirty years. Between 1891 and 1904 he published his poetry, with
little success. He died in 1933.
